Dew from the Sea
The legend goes that the Virgin Mary stopped to rest, and spread her blue cloak over a nearby bush, turning the white flowers to blue, and so the shrub became known as the “Rose of Mary.” Actually, rosemary has been around since ancient times; the name is derived from the Latin ros marinus, meaning “dew from the sea” for the shrubs growing on the rocky cliffs of the Mediterranean Sea, and it was sacred to the Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations for food, cosmetics, medicinals, and important rituals.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) is a savory herb used for meats and stews. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the plant, and is a potent healing remedy for the body, emotions and mind. Here are some ways you can benefit from using Rosemary essential oil:
- Digestive System: Rosemary essential oil detoxifies the digestive system, stimulates appetite, and helps with production and release of bile for proper digestion. It relieves indigestion, bloating and cramping in the stomach, and reduces flatulence and constipation problems. Rub a drop or two on the bottoms of your feet or on the stomach to aid your digestive process after meals.
- Hair and Scalp Treatment: Rosemary oil stimulates the hair cuticle at the root, encouraging hair growth and strength, as well as reducing hair loss and gray hair. Two or three drops of rosemary in your favorite shampoo are a great way to give your hair regular treatments with no fuss! Massaging the scalp with a few drops of rosemary and coconut oil eliminates dry, itchy, irritated scalp and dandruff flakes, and adds nourishing ingredients for proper pH balance, giving your hair a healthy, vibrant appearance.
- Pain Relief: Many painful conditions are relieved with the healing benefits of Rosemary essential oil, like headaches, muscle aches from exertion and flu, arthritis, fibromyalgia, sprains and joint inflammation. Rosemary stimulates blood circulation, bringing faster healing and reduced inflammation to injuries. Massage a little on your temples for instant headache relief, or mix with a little coconut oil or olive oil and rub on sprains, joints and muscles
- Mental Boost: Rosemary oil is a great remedy for people who are under stress, from work, studies, or life in general. Inhaling just the aroma of one drop instantly erases fatigue, lack of concentration, and stressful feelings. The relaxing nature of rosemary comes from its ability to slow the “fight or flight” adrenaline response that causes too much cortisol to be released, allowing your natural energy to return. So keep a bottle of rosemary at your desk at work or school, and just remember to BREATHE!
TIP: Rosemary is good for pets, too! Massage into your furry friend’s fur for extra shine and a healthy coat.
