Safe and Gentle Oil!
Eucalyptus smithii is perhaps the most gentle of all the varieties of Eucalyptus essential oils. It comes from the Gully Gum tree in southeastern Australia, which grows in gullies and moist swamplands. It’s interesting to note that this tree that prefers a moist, humid environment works best in steam, diffused in mist vaporizers, warm baths and steam inhalations.
The indigenous people of southeastern Australia have used e.smithii for thousands of years, inhaling the oil from boiled leaves for respiratory health and applying the steamed leaves to the skin to heal wounds. Of course, the European explorers claimed the discovery in the 1700’s when Captain James Cook and Sir Joseph Banks sailed into the region. By 1788, the process of distilling the leaves into essential oil was already being recorded! And the rest is history!
Eucalyptus smithii is a wonderful essential oil to have in your home medicine cabinet for treating many conditions. Here are just a few common reasons to keep it on hand:
- Respiratory System: Eucalyptus smithii’s pleasant fragrance and gentle nature make it an effective aromatherapy or steam mist vaporizer oil for decongestion. It‰Ûªs an expectorant of mucus, stimulates a good body detox, and is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-infectious, and anti-inflammatory, so it helps with your fight against colds and flu, and clears sinus infection, bronchial coughs, and cold symptoms.
- Insects: Eucalyptus smithii is a natural repellent for mosquitoes, fleas, cockroaches, lice, and dust mites. It’s safe to spray on the body (a few drops mixed with 1 oz. water or witch hazel), and can be used under the bed, in corners, cabinets, doorways and windows, as a repellent spray to prevent insects in your home. e. smithii also works to reduce pain and inflammation from insect stings from mosquitoes, bees and hornets.
- Young and Old: Babies, toddlers and elderly people often have thinner, more sensitive skin than other people. Even the nasal passages of young children and elderly people seem more sensitive to irritation from strong aromas. e. smithii is the most gentle eucalyptus variety, and is more easily tolerated by most with sensitive, thinner skin condition and heightened sensitivity to smells.
Tip: Eucalyptus smithii is great for removing sticky adhesives from Band-Aids, label residue on glass jars, chewing gum on clothes, shoes and hair, and grease spots. Just a few drops, used full strength, should dissolve it in no time!
