Blood oranges originated from the same source as most oranges, found growing wild in India and China for thousands of years, and used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicinal practices. Around the 11th or 12th century the Moors brought oranges to Sicily, where the monks experimented with sweeter hybrid varieties, and recorded seeing the Blood orange’s dark colored flesh in the mid 1600’s.
Blood oranges are still grown in Sicily today, with three varieties, the Moro, Toracco and Sanguinello oranges. Blood orange essential oil is extracted through cold-pressing the peel which contains very aromatic, powerful oil with antioxidant and healing effects.
Find out how Blood Orange essential oil works to support your health and wellness. Here are just a few ways:
- Antioxidant: Blood Orange essential oil is one of the most potent antioxidants, as shown by its red fruit color, and the natural chemical it contains, Anthocyanin, that supports the body’s immune system, and actually slows or prevents, and in some cases eliminates, the growth of cancer cells in the body. It’s high in Vitamins A and C, Potassium, Iron, Calcium and Fiber, giving the body lots of support for health and wellness.
- Facial Toner: Blood Orange oil has strong astringent properties, along with antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects, so it makes a wonderful toner when used after cleansing your face in the morning and before bed. Add a few drops to 4 oz. of witch hazel or use 4 oz. of water with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar added. Put in a spray bottle and mist, or use with a cotton ball to dab lightly on your face before applying moisturizer or makeup.
- TMJ: If you’re waking up with clenched or grinding teeth, sore jaws, ear pressure and pain, you may have TMJ (temporomandibular joint) irritation. You can use Blood Orange essential oil topically, on the points where your jaws meet near the ears- just a drop mixed with coconut or jojoba oil will do it, and massage in circles. Blood Orange’s sedative and relaxing properties will help keep you in a relaxed state, and anti-inflammatory properties will help reduce swelling and irritation, so that TMJ can be relieved.
Tip: When the family is slow to start in the mornings, just put your mist vaporizer in the kitchen or family bathroom. The zesty Blood Orange aromatherapy will get them moving–without complaining!
